Bazi (八字, literally “eight characters”), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese system of destiny analysis that translates the exact time and date of your birth into a chart of eight characters drawn from the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. These guides walk you through what each piece means — no prior knowledge required.
A Bazi chart has four pillars — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each containing one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. The Day Stem, called the Day Master (日主), is the protagonist of the chart: the headline answer to “who am I, fundamentally?” Around it, the Ten Archetypes (the classical Ten Gods) describe how each other character in your chart relates to your core self, shaping patterns in career, money, relationships, and self-expression.
Underneath the pillars sits the Five Elements framework (五行, wuxing): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Every stem and branch carries one of them, and their generating and controlling cycles explain how the parts of your personality support or temper each other. A skilled reading also weighs your current Life Chapter (大运, dayun) — a roughly ten-year window whose elemental signature shifts the kind of energy you're working with.
