Chinese astrology, clearly defined

A full Bazi chart is more than a zodiac animal

The popular Chinese zodiac labels an animal year using Lunar New Year. Bazi uses four pillars and a solar-term boundary, including Lichun (Start of Spring) for the Year Pillar. This page keeps those conventions separate so a boundary date is not given a misleading single answer.

Looking only for an animal-year answer? Read the existing Chinese zodiac guide first.

How your recorded time becomes a chart

  1. Recorded local time

Enter the time on your birth record.

  2. Time adjustment

We account for the time zone, historical daylight saving, longitude and the equation of time.

  3. Calculate the chart

The adjusted time determines the Hour Pillar and is used to calculate the chart.

Used for this site's Luck Pillar direction convention (with the birth year's yin/yang stem) and some gender-dependent symbolic-star (shen sha) rules, such as Yuan Chen.

Enter the recorded local time, or mark it unknown. For unknown time, noon is an internal calculation reference, not your birth time. The Hour Pillar, exact solar-time correction, precise Luck Pillar start, and Life Chapter and annual timing are withheld. Near a solar-term or day boundary, the Year, Month, and Day pillars may also need verification.

Choose your birth city from the search results. Its time zone, historical clock changes and longitude let us adjust the recorded time to local solar time.

Birth times follow the linked Astro-Databank entries (source rating AA); chart accuracy depends on those records.

What this Chinese astrology calculator shows

Four Pillars

Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars built from your birth moment; unknown time gives a three-pillar reference.

Day Master

The Day Stem used as the chart's central reference point.

Five Elements

The Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water distribution in the chart.

Life Chapters

Decade-by-decade timing periods with the calculation basis visible, when the birth time is known.

The chart is a deterministic calculation under the displayed rules, not a scientific measurement or a guaranteed prediction. If you are comparing calendar dates rather than generating a birth chart, use the Chinese calendar converter and daily almanac.

Born between Lichun and Lunar New Year?

Consider February 5, 2027 at noon, at longitude 120°E in China (UTC+8). The popular Chinese zodiac still gives Fire Horse (丙午), because Lunar New Year is February 6. The Bazi Year Pillar is already Fire Goat (丁未), because Lichun has passed on February 4. The two answers describe different year boundaries. Use the Chinese zodiac calculator for the animal-year label; use the birth chart above for all four pillars.

What if the birth time is unknown?

Select the unknown-time option rather than guessing. You receive a Year, Month, and Day pillar reference, without an Hour Pillar, exact solar-time correction, precise Luck Pillar start, or Life Chapter and annual timing. The internal noon reference is not a recorded birth time. Near a solar-term or day boundary, the other three pillars may also need verification. See the unknown-time Lichun example before treating a boundary result as final.
