1. The Day Master — The Chart’s Reference Point

Every reading starts with the Day Master: the heavenly stem of your Day Pillar. It is the reference point for the chart’s element relationships. Everything else in the reading is read in relation to this one stem.

In this example, the Day Master is 甲 (Jia) — Yang Wood. Our modern metaphor is a tall tree: growth, initiative, and the drive to build something that keeps expanding. Read that as an interpretive lens for ambition and persistence, rather than a verified personality assessment of the person behind the chart.

Next, judge whether the Day Master is strong or receptive — that is, whether the rest of the chart feeds it or drains it. The Month Stem 甲 adds Wood support, while Water in 亥 and the hidden stems can feed Wood. The 午 month channels Wood into Fire output; Metal in 辛 and 申 supplies a controlling relationship. Earth also draws on Wood through the wealth relationship. Strength therefore needs a reading of the month command, roots, and interactions, not just a percentage. The engine uses its fixed solar-term month convention for Pretoria; 午 here is not a claim that June is local summer in South Africa.

How to read your own: find the Day Stem, learn its element and polarity, then count how many pillars support it (same element, or the element that generates it) versus drain it (the element it generates into, or the one that controls it). 2. The Five Elements — Your Energy Balance

The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — are not materials but energy types, and a chart is a snapshot of how those five are distributed. Two questions unlock the reading: which element is heaviest, and do your heavy elements feed each other (smooth flow) or control each other (friction)?

The chart's weighted tally puts Wood at about 26% and Earth at about 26%, followed by Metal at 21%, Water at 16%, and Fire at 11%. These are the same stem, branch, and hidden-stem weights used in the chart above; all five elements are present. Wood controls Earth, the wealth element for a Wood Day Master, while Metal controls Wood and Water feeds it. Our reading focuses on the tension between expansion, practical resources, and external constraints. Fire's smaller share does not cancel the influence of the 午 month command, and a wealth relationship does not measure anyone's net worth.

A missing element means it does not appear in the positions being counted. It does not establish that a person lacks a quality, ability or source of support.

3. The Ten Archetypes — Traditional Relationship Themes

The Ten Gods (十神) are the relationship of each stem to your Day Master. There are ten of them — five element-relationships times two polarities — and we reframe them as modern archetypes so they read as memorable names for traditional themes. Repeated archetypes are recurring relationships in the chart, not measured personality traits.

The example surfaces three archetypes, each in a different pillar:

• The Authority (正官)· Year pillar

  Traditionally associated with rules, responsibilities and formal authority.

• The Equal (比肩)· Month pillar

  Traditionally associated with peers, shared interests and self-direction.

• The Opportunity Magnet (偏财)· Hour pillar

  Traditionally associated with flexible resources, exchange and opportunities; it does not promise income.

The visible stems pair authority, independence, and opportunity: 正官 in the Year, 比肩 in the Month, and 偏财 in the reported Hour Pillar. Together they offer a vocabulary for structure, self-direction, and managing resources. The Hour archetype remains conditional on the biography-reported time. Recognizing the rocket-company clue does not make these archetypes proof of business success or personal motives.

4. Life Chapters — The Timing Layer

A natal chart is static, but your life is not. The Da Yun (大运) — Luck Pillars — divide your life into roughly ten-year chapters, each carrying its own stem-and-branch and therefore its own element and archetype. Read the current chapter the same way you read a pillar: how does its element interact with your Day Master?

Using the reported birth time, the example's chapter for 2026 is the 己丑 chapter (ages 48–57, 2018–2027). It carries Earth (土) energy, and its leading archetype is The Wealth Builder (正财). traditionally associated with managed resources, regular income and practical responsibilities.

A chapter’s element can generate, control or share the Day Master’s element. These relationships are read alongside the natal structure; no single relationship establishes how the decade will feel or what events will occur.
