Bazi Da Yun Starting Age Calculation

The formula behind Luck Pillars (大运), with a reproducible example and exact start-date receipt.

Published August 1, 2026 · Updated September 17, 2026

To calculate a Bazi Da Yun starting age, first determine whether the Luck Pillars run forward or backward, select the next or previous Jie solar-term boundary, measure the exact time gap from birth to that Jie, convert the gap with the chosen provider rule, then add the converted interval to the corrected birth time. The result is the date and time when the first ten-year Luck Pillar begins.

Your natal Bazi chart is the hand you were dealt. But life doesn't unfold all at once — it moves in chapters. In Bazi, those chapters are called Luck Pillars (大运, Dà Yùn), and each one lasts roughly ten years. Together, they form a timeline of shifting energies that tells you when certain themes will be prominent in your life.

Think of it this way: your natal chart is the stage and the cast of characters. The Luck Pillars are the acts of the play — each act brings a different set of energies to the foreground, changing what's easy, what's hard, and what wants to happen.

How Luck Pillars Are Calculated

1. Determine Forward or Backward Direction

Luck Pillars are derived from the Month Pillar. Under this site's convention, direction depends on gender and the yin or yang polarity of the natal Year Stem. A forward chart uses the next Jie after birth; a backward chart uses the preceding Jie. Direction also determines whether later stem-branch pairs advance or reverse through the sixty-pillar cycle.

YangMaleForward (顺排)Next Jie after birth
YinFemaleForward (顺排)Next Jie after birth
YinMaleBackward (逆排)Previous Jie before birth
YangFemaleBackward (逆排)Previous Jie before birth

2. Select the Relevant Jie

The calculation uses the twelve monthly Jie boundaries, not whichever of all twenty-four solar terms happens to be closest. For a forward chart, find the next Jie; for a backward chart, find the previous Jie. The Hong Kong Observatory publishes solar-term dates and times, while the pinned calculation library resolves the precise Jie instant for the birth year.

3. Convert the Birth-to-Jie Interval

Measure the absolute interval between the corrected birth time and the selected Jie, preserving seconds. This site uses tyme4ts DefaultChildLimitProvider. Its conversion is hierarchical: whole units are removed in the order below and any remainder continues to the next row.

Worked Example: From Birth to First Da Yun

ENGINE-BACKED WORKED EXAMPLE

From birth time to first Da Yun · 起运回执

June 15, 1990 at 12:00 civil time in Beijing, China. The engine first applies the documented historical time-zone and true-solar-time correction, then calculates the start boundary below.

1Direction
Male + Yang year stem → Forward toward the next Jie
2Reference Jie
Moderate Heat (小暑) · 1990-07-07 17:00:28
3Birth-to-Jie interval
22 days, 6 hours, 14 minutes, 52 seconds from 1990-06-15 10:45:36
4Converted interval
7 years, 5 months, 1 day, 5 hours, 44 minutes
5First chapter begins
1997-11-16 16:29:36 · timeline age label 8

Provider rule: 3 interval days = 1 start-age year; finer units are 6 hours = 1 month, 12 minutes = 1 day, 30 seconds = 1 hour, and each remaining second = 2 minutes.

The converted interval is an elapsed offset. The integer age shown on the decade timeline follows the provider's year-based age label.

The 1990 Beijing example includes historical daylight saving time, so the engine input shown in the receipt is earlier than the recorded 12:00 civil time. This is why the calculation starts from the corrected time rather than silently treating the clock reading as local solar time.

The production example above uses a male birth recorded at 12:00 civil time in Beijing on 15 June 1990. Because historical daylight saving time and local apparent solar time are applied first, the receipt begins from 10:45:36 rather than the written clock time. The Yang Year Stem and male gender produce a forward sequence, so the next Jie is Moderate Heat (小暑).

The raw interval is 22 days, 6 hours, 14 minutes, and 52 seconds. Applying the provider formula gives an elapsed offset of 7 years, 5 months, 1 day, 5 hours, and 44 minutes, placing the first start boundary on 16 November 1997. The decade timeline labels that first chapter as age 8 because its age field is a year-based display label; the exact elapsed offset remains 7 years and 5 months. The receipt preserves both instead of collapsing them into one number.

For your own chart, open How this start age was calculated beneath the Life Chapters timeline. It exposes the same five checkpoints: direction, reference Jie, raw interval, converted interval, and exact start time.

The first start boundary is an exact timestamp under the selected convention, not an estimate such as “somewhere between age seven and eight.” Each later Luck Pillar begins ten years after the previous boundary, creating a sequence that extends from childhood through later life.

Reading Your Current Life Chapter

Each Luck Pillar carries a two-character pillar — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch — just like the pillars in your natal chart. The stem tells you the surface energy of the decade; the branch tells you the deeper current. Together they form a theme.

The most important thing to look at is how your current Luck Pillar interacts with your Day Master. If the Luck Pillar's element generates your Day Master's element, this decade tends to feel supportive — opportunities come more easily, and you feel resourced. If it controls your Day Master, the decade may involve discipline, structure, or challenges that ultimately sharpen you. If it's the same element, the decade amplifies your core traits — for better or worse.

When Chapters Change: Transitions (交运)

The boundary between one Luck Pillar and the next — called 交运 (jiāo yùn, "changing luck") — is often a noticeable turning point. The shift in elemental energy can correspond with major life changes: career pivots, relocations, relationships beginning or ending, or a palpable shift in how you feel about your direction.

Some transitions are dramatic (a controlling element giving way to a generating one can feel like a weight lifting). Others are subtle — you only notice the change in hindsight, looking back at how different life felt before and after.

Luck Pillars vs. Your Fixed Chart

There's a key distinction in Bazi between your natal chart (命, mìng) and your luck periods (运, yùn). Your natal chart is fixed — it's the potential you were born with. Your luck periods are the changing conditions that flow through that potential over time.

A common metaphor: your natal chart is a car, and your luck periods are the road. A sports car (strong natal chart) on a bumpy road (challenging luck period) will still struggle. A modest car (average natal chart) on a highway (supportive luck period) can outperform expectations. Neither the car nor the road tells the whole story — it's the interaction that matters.

Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars (流年)

Within each ten-year Luck Pillar, individual years carry their own energy called annual pillars (流年). The annual pillar is a finer-grained layer — it shapes the specific flavor of a single year within the broader decade theme.

This is why a "good" decade can still contain a difficult year, and a "challenging" decade can still have bright spots. The Luck Pillar sets the background; the annual pillar adds the foreground detail.

Accuracy, Unknown Birth Time, and Boundaries

  • True solar time: this calculator corrects recorded civil time using the historical UTC offset, birthplace longitude, and Equation of Time before calculating Da Yun. See the true solar time methodology.
  • Unknown birth time: the exact receipt is withheld when time is unknown because inventing noon would imply false precision. Compare a plausible range if the boundary matters.
  • Near a Jie: a birth close to a Jie boundary needs precise time, place, and ephemeris data because a small input change can produce a very early start or change the relevant interval.
  • School differences: direction, rounding, calendar provider, and age labelling are conventions. Compare methods before comparing final ages.

The direction and near-Jie claims above are checkable rather than rhetorical. The public calculation benchmark suite pins one case for every cell of the direction matrix — Yang and Yin year stems crossed with the recorded gender input — alongside paired cases that sit hours either side of a Jie. The two-hours-before-Jingzhe case and its paired post-boundary case are three hours apart on the clock and produce a near-immediate start and a ten-year start respectively, which is the clearest illustration of why the reference Jie has to be checked before the arithmetic.

Methodology and sources

These guides explain the traditional Bazi framework as an educational system, not as a guaranteed prediction or professional advice. When you use the calculator, it converts the supplied birth date and time into the Four Pillars, uses the selected location for time-zone and true-solar-time correction, and then reads the Day Master, element relationships, and Life Chapters in context. Results depend on the birth details and calculation conventions you provide.
