I'm a Rooster. It's a fun piece of trivia. But it's also just one of the eight characters in a full Bazi chart, and it's the smallest, most public layer of who you are. This page shows you how to find your zodiac sign, what it actually means, and where it fits inside the larger Four Pillars of Destiny.

The Twelve Chinese Zodiac Animals

The Chinese zodiac cycles through twelve animals, one per year, in a fixed sequence. Each animal pairs with one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) on a 60-year cycle — so there are technically 60 distinct zodiac-year combinations, not just 12. The complete 60-year cycle repeats, which is why your grandfather's Dragon year isn't quite the same as yours.

What Your Zodiac Animal Actually Tells You

In popular culture, the zodiac animal is treated as a full personality description — Dragons are bold, Goats are gentle, Roosters are punctual. There's a kernel of truth in those folk descriptions (each animal carries an element and a temperament), but in a serious Bazi reading the Year Branch — your zodiac sign — speaks more to the broad social backdrop you were born into than to your core self. It describes generational influences, the cultural climate of your cohort, how the world tends to perceive you at first meeting. It does not describe who you are at your core.

For your core identity, Bazi looks at the Day Master instead — the top character of your Day Pillar, derived from your specific birth day, not your birth year. So while your zodiac sign gives a true but shallow read on your social persona, your Day Master gives a much more specific read on your actual temperament, decision-making patterns, and recurring life themes. The zodiac is the tip of the iceberg; Bazi is the iceberg.

This is also why two people who share your zodiac animal can be utterly different from you. Everyone born in your birth year shares the Year Branch, but only people born on your exact birth day share your Day Master — a roughly 1-in-10 chance (there are ten possible Day Stems, cycling through the calendar). The zodiac groups people by year; the full Bazi chart distinguishes them by day and hour.

Elements and the 60-Year Cycle

The zodiac animal repeats every 12 years, but the full zodiac-year combination — animal plus element — repeats only every 60 years. That's because each animal pairs with one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in Yang or Yin form. A Wood Dragon, a Fire Dragon, an Earth Dragon, a Metal Dragon, and a Water Dragon all exist — and each lands in a different decade of the 60-year cycle.

This matters because the element shapes how the animal's energy expresses. A Wood Dragon (甲辰, last seen 2024) carries growth-oriented, initiative-taking dragon energy. A Metal Dragon (庚辰, last seen 2000) carries a more sharpened, decisive version. Same archetype, different flavor. To know your specific element-animal pairing, you need to know not just your birth year but the exact stem-branch combination of your Year Pillar — which is exactly what the calculator generates.

Confusingly, there's a separate folk tradition of the year element — which assigns one element to an entire year in a way that doesn't map onto the Bazi stem-branch system. Our calculator uses the Bazi system throughout, so the element you see next to your zodiac animal is your true Year Branch element in the Four Pillars framework, not the folk year element.

Zodiac Compatibility — Take It with a Grain of Salt

You'll often see zodiac compatibility charts claiming certain animal pairings are perfect matches and others are doomed. The classical framework does identify combinations (合), clashes (冲), and triangles of harmony (三合) between branches — for example, the Snake, Rooster, and Ox form a harmonious Metal triangle. These patterns are real in the sense that they describe genuine resonance or friction between branch energies.

But judging a relationship by zodiac animals alone is like judging a person by their sun sign alone — entertaining, occasionally insightful, often wrong. Two people with a so-called "clashing" zodiac can have excellent charts in every other respect. A serious Bazi compatibility reading looks at the full charts of both people, not just the year animals. Treat the folk compatibility charts as icebreakers, not oracles.
