Before Lichun: the Bazi year has not changed

If you were born in the first days of February, you are the reader this case was written for. Almost every popular Chinese zodiac source switches animal at Lunar New Year, which falls in mid-February. The Bazi Year Pillar does not wait for that date. It waits for Lichun, the solar term that opens spring, which usually arrives on 3 or 4 February.

That gap is why two calculators can disagree about your zodiac animal without either one being broken. A person born on 3 February 2026 is still inside the preceding Yi-Si year under Bazi rules, even though the Gregorian year has already turned. The Year Pillar feeds the Ten Gods calculation, the Luck Pillar direction, and most of the traditional reading, so the dispute is not cosmetic.

This page pins one side of that boundary rather than arguing about it. It shows what the production engine returns for a record dated before Lichun, and the build fails if the answer ever drifts. What it does not do is claim that every school agrees on where the year turns. The rule is stated so you can check it against your own record instead of trusting a screenshot.

One further consequence is worth spelling out, because it travels further than the year pillar itself. Because the Year Pillar determines whether your Luck Pillars run forward or backward, a boundary error here does not stay contained. It changes the direction of the ten-year periods, which in turn changes which solar term anchors your starting age. A single wrong boundary can therefore restructure a chart well beyond the one pillar that visibly changed.
