It's also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what a Bazi compatibility reading actually measures, what it cannot tell you, and how to use it as a tool for understanding rather than a verdict on your relationship.

What Bazi Compatibility Actually Measures

A serious Bazi compatibility reading is not a pass/fail test. It doesn't produce a score or a yes/no verdict. Instead, it maps the elemental dynamics between two charts — where they complement each other naturally, where friction is likely, and what kind of work the relationship will require. Think of it as a compatibility map rather than a compatibility score.

The reading works by comparing three layers of interaction between the two charts. None of these layers is decisive on its own — a good reading weighs all three together and treats the result as a framework for understanding, not a prediction.

The Three Layers of a Compatibility Reading

1. Elemental Complementarity

The first layer looks at whether the two charts' Five Elements balances complement or clash. If one chart is abundant in Fire and deficient in Water, and the other chart carries a lot of Water, there's a natural complement — the second person brings what the first lacks. Conversely, two charts both abundant in Fire may amplify each other's intensity to the point of burnout. This is the broadest layer: it sets the elemental weather of the relationship.

2. Day Master Relationship

The second layer compares the two people's Day Masters — their core-self elements. Do they share an element? Does one generate the other (a nurturing dynamic)? Does one control the other (a friction dynamic)? Two Wood Day Masters understand each other intuitively; a Wood Day Master paired with a Fire Day Master creates a generating flow where the Wood person naturally supports the Fire person; a Wood Day Master paired with a Metal Day Master carries a controlling tension that requires conscious management.

3. Pillar Interactions

The third and most detailed layer looks at how the individual branches of the two charts interact through the classical relationship patterns — combinations (合), clashes (冲), and harmony triangles (三合). A combination between the two people's Day Branches (the spouse palaces) suggests natural harmony in the intimate relationship; a clash suggests an area that will need active work. Importantly, clashes are not deal-breakers — they're areas of friction that, when navigated consciously, can produce a more dynamic and resilient partnership than a chart with zero friction.

The Zodiac Animal Myth

You've probably seen the popular compatibility charts: Rat and Ox are a perfect match, Dragon and Dog are doomed. These folk compatibility systems reduce the entire Bazi chart to a single character — the Year Branch, which is just the zodiac animal — and judge compatibility from that alone. It's the equivalent of judging a relationship from sun signs alone in Western astrology: entertaining, occasionally insightful, and wildly oversimplified.

A real Bazi compatibility reading never judges from the zodiac animal alone. The Year Branch is the smallest, most public layer of a chart. Two Dragons can be utterly incompatible if their Day Masters clash and their element balances fight. Two people whose zodiac animals "clash" can have a deeply complementary relationship when the full charts are read. Treat the folk compatibility charts as icebreakers, not oracles.

What Bazi Compatibility Cannot Tell You

After signing in, a user will select two charts already saved in their private chart library and receive a narrative map of complementarity, friction, and discussion prompts — not a percentage, pass/fail label, or recommendation to marry or separate. The comparison feature is not available yet; this guide documents the method and the boundary it must keep.

Using Bazi Compatibility Responsibly

If you want to explore Bazi compatibility with a partner, here's the responsible way to use it:

1. Start with two complete charts. Understand your own Day Master and element balance before comparing with someone else's. The planned account flow will select charts already saved in your private library rather than putting two people's birth details into a public URL.
2. Use another person's data only with permission. Birth date, time, and place are personal information. Do not save or compare a partner's chart without their knowledge and consent.
3. Look for complementarity, not perfection. No two charts are a "perfect match." Look for where one chart's strengths balance the other's weaknesses — that's the gold.
4. Treat friction as information, not as a red flag. A clash between Day Branches doesn't mean the relationship is doomed; it means that area will require conscious work. Every strong relationship has friction points.
5. Never use Bazi to override your own judgment. If your charts clash but your relationship is healthy, trusting the relationship over the chart is the right call. Bazi is a perspective, not a referee.
6. Bring it up with care. If you share Bazi insights with a partner, frame it as curiosity about your dynamic, not as a test of whether you "should" be together.
